How to Extract Text From a Screenshot Automatically

Every Screenmarks screenshot has its text automatically extracted with OCR — no manual copying required.

Normally, text in a screenshot is locked inside an image — you can't copy it, search it, or use it. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) changes that by reading the image and extracting the text. Screenmarks does this automatically for every screenshot you take.

Step-by-Step

1

Take a screenshot with Screenmarks

Use Alt+Shift+S or click the extension icon. The screenshot is sent to Screenmarks for processing.

2

Wait a few seconds

Screenmarks processes visible text in the background. Typical processing takes 3-10 seconds.

3

Open the screenshot

Click the screenshot in your library. The OCR-extracted text is stored and used for search — it powers the searchability of your library.

4

Search by extracted text

Any word that appeared in the screenshot is now searchable. Type it in the search bar to find the screenshot later.

5

Use Ask for deeper extraction

Open the Ask feature on any screenshot and ask: "What is the pricing on this page?" or "List all the features mentioned." Ask reads the extracted context and answers.

Pro Tip

OCR works on any visible text — websites, PDFs viewed in browser, code editors, app interfaces, printed documents photographed on screen.
