Chrome Extension Privacy Policy

Effective Date: March 8, 2026

This privacy policy specifically covers the Screenmarks Chrome browser extension. For our complete privacy policy covering all Screenmarks services, please see our main privacy policy.

1. Extension Permissions Explained

The Screenmarks extension requests the following permissions:

activeTab: Used to capture screenshots of the currently active tab when you click the capture button or use a keyboard shortcut. No data is collected without your explicit action.

scripting: Used to inject a visual overlay for region selection when you want to capture a specific area of the page. The script only runs when you initiate a region capture and does not track or monitor your browsing.

storage: Used to store your authentication state locally so you don't need to sign in every time you open the extension. Also stores preferences like custom API URLs for enterprise users.

identity: Used for Google Sign-In authentication. This allows you to securely sign in with your Google account instead of creating a separate password.

2. Data Collection

What We Collect:

  • Screenshot images — Only when you explicitly click "Save"
  • Page URL and title — For the tab where the screenshot was taken
  • Timestamp — When the screenshot was captured
  • Notes — Any text you add before saving

What We Do NOT Collect:

  • Browsing history
  • Keystrokes or form data
  • Cookies or session data from other sites
  • Any data in the background without your action

3. Data Transmission

Screenshots are only uploaded to our servers when you explicitly click the "Save" button. All data transmission uses HTTPS encryption.

The extension communicates with our API at api.screenmarks.com for:

  • User authentication
  • Screenshot uploads
  • Fetching your account status

4. Local Storage

The extension stores the following data locally in Chrome:

  • Authentication token — To keep you signed in
  • User preferences — Such as custom API URL for enterprise
  • Cached user info — Your name, email, and plan for display

This data remains on your device and is cleared when you sign out or uninstall the extension.

5. Third-Party Services

When you save a screenshot, it may be processed by the following services:

Google Gemini: Screenshots are sent to Gemini for AI analysis, including OCR text extraction, automatic titling, visual description generation, and searchable embeddings. Google's use of this data is governed by their privacy policy and API terms.

Polar: As of March 8, 2026, if you subscribe to a paid plan, payment processing is handled by Polar. The extension itself does not handle any payment information.

6. Content Scripts Disclosure

The extension injects a content script for the region capture feature. This script:

  • Only runs when you initiate a region capture
  • Displays a visual overlay for area selection
  • Does NOT read page content, forms, or any other data
  • Does NOT inject advertisements
  • Does NOT modify page content
  • Is immediately removed after selection is complete

7. Your Rights & Data Deletion

Sign Out: Click "Sign out" in the extension popup to clear all locally stored data.

Uninstall: Removing the extension deletes all local data immediately.

Delete Account Data: You can delete individual screenshots from your dashboard. For complete account deletion, contact us at support@screenmarks.com.

Data Export: Pro users can export all their data from the dashboard.

8. Updates to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy when we release new extension features. Significant changes will be communicated through the extension update notes or via email to registered users.
